Can image translation preserve formatting?
Basic line breaks may survive, but exact layout preservation requires coordinates, font choices, text fitting, and document reconstruction.
Separate three possible deliverables
The word formatting can mean readable text, editable structure, or a visual replica. Each deliverable requires a different amount of reconstruction and checking.
| Deliverable | What must be retained | What still needs review |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning-first translation | Headings and paragraphs in clear reading order | Names, numbers, warnings, and missing lines against the image. |
| Editable structured document | Text boxes, tables, labels, captions, and footnote relationships | Row and column alignment plus every label-to-value association. |
| Visual replica | Structure plus direction, font, spacing, color, and fitted translated text | Overflow, changed line breaks, typography, and every reconstructed region. |
Define formatting before promising preservation
Plain OCR output records characters and may approximate lines. It does not by itself preserve the exact position, font, color, or relationship of every block. Tables, columns, labels, and captions need structured extraction.
Translated text can be longer or shorter than the source, so even correctly detected boxes may no longer fit. Right-to-left or vertical scripts can require a different reading and layout direction.
The guide to preserving layout during image translation separates verified text from document reconstruction.
Use side-by-side source and translation when verification matters. Use manual layout or specialist software when a publishable translated document is required, and preserve the original as the evidence for every reconstructed element. Before delivery, test text wrapping, labels, reading direction, and every association between text and image.
Define what must be preserved
Choose whether the deliverable needs meaning, editable text, or visual fidelity.
Record text boxes, row and column relationships, captions, and footnote markers before translation.
Fit the real translated text in the actual font and container before publishing.
Layout preservation is a separate production task
An OCR transcript can be accurate without recreating the page, and an attractive overlay can be wrong while looking faithful. Keep the source and translated text side by side during reconstruction so every label, value, and visual region can be checked.
For a document made of page images, start with whether you can translate a scanned PDF document before choosing a reconstruction method.
