OCR Image Readiness Checker

Inspect an image locally before upload and get a transparent checklist for likely OCR obstacles. The check runs on your device and does not upload the selected file.

Inspect the source image

Choose the exact file you plan to process. The browser measures the original dimensions and samples a scaled copy for tonal range and edge variation.

Readiness report

Select an image to see facts about the file and prompts for problems that still need a visual check.

  • File dimensions and format
  • Sampled light-to-dark range
  • Edge variation that can flag a soft image

What the checker measures

Dimensions, file type, and file size come directly from the selected file. Tonal range is the difference between the lightest and darkest sampled pixels. Edge variation uses a simple Laplacian calculation on a reduced canvas. It can flag a very soft or low-detail image, but it cannot identify words or predict OCR accuracy.

Check the text with your eyes

  • Zoom to the smallest character you need. Its strokes should remain distinct.
  • Look for glare, motion blur, clipped lines, strong perspective, and text over patterns.
  • Confirm columns, speech bubbles, captions, and vertical text have an obvious reading order.
  • Recapture when one uncertain digit, name, warning, or unit could change the result.

Do not treat this as an OCR score

A detailed photograph can produce high edge variation even when its text is unreadable. A clean title card can produce a lower value while remaining easy to read. Use these measurements to investigate the image, then compare the extracted source text with the original. Our guide explains how to improve photo translation accuracy before another attempt.

Continue only with a reviewable source

Use the local measurements to decide whether to recapture, crop, or continue. Then compare the OCR source with the original before translating any critical field.
